I think the first thing to refer the applications in favour for his report, making the enquiry in the last part of Mr. Johnson's minute.

In venturing to submit to your kind consideration my few particulars concerning education & experience, I do so in the hope that they may not prove too tedious and that they may be the means of assisting my promotion in Her Majesty's Service?

I am 30 years of age and began my scholastic duties at Holy Trinity School, Chester, where I was apprenticed as "a Pupil Teacher" for the then usual period of 5 years. In 1878, having completed that term and being about to enter the Training College, Chester, the Revd Mr. Marston, Rector of Holy Trinity, presented me, in the presence of many well-wishers, with a purse of money as a mark of his appreciation and kind regard. During my term of study in the College (1879-80), I had the honour of distinguishing myself in Mathematics & Classics, and on leaving obtained a First Class Certificate, as well as Advanced Certificates for various sciences. From 1881-84, I held an appointment as first Assistant master in St Peter's Schools, Birkenhead, where, I believe, I gave every satisfaction. On September 1884, having applied to the Crown Agents for abroad, I was offered one in the Anglo-Chinese College at Malacca,

but the appointment was not accepted due to the remuneration.

The Rt. Honble. Lord Knutsford, G.C.M.G.

Secretary of State for the Colonies.
